He was an actor in a short film in Hollywood. He has led an entire student union. He was a ghostwriter for a multi-billion-dollar asset manager whose work was featured on Forbes.
Matthew is a renaissance individual. The youngest of 8 siblings in a blended family, Matthew earned his bachelor’s in economics from Hampton University (VA) in 2010. Always an active member of his community, he initially played on their golf team, but soon caught the student government bug.
He was immediately hooked. He was active in student government all four years in several capacities, rising to the ranks of Vice President and then elected President in my Senior year.
You wouldn’t know it, but Matthew was shy going into college and was worried about his limited leadership experience starting out in student government.
“Student government was a crash course that helped me grow and come out of my shell. It helped me learn my own leadership style, and how to effectively use team work to serve my colleagues. Satisfying different parties—students, and administrators particularly—was a balancing act that required both flexibility and authenticity.”
After college, Matthew worked at Broker & Associate Financial Consultant, Charles Schwab, served as a finance copywriter at MBC Strategic and a fintech copywriter at William Mills Agency.
“I love learning about markets and investing, and I do my best work when I can work collaboratively with teammates and apply my financial knowledge.”
In yet another interesting twist, Matthew lived and worked in Osaka, Japan as a business English teacher from 2016-2017.
Yet, Matthew feels he’s found his home here at JOYN.
“I excel by seeing our work through the client’s eyes, listen well, and use clear communication when providing solutions. Clients come first, always.”
“What drew me to the company was its focus on the client’s life priorities, and dedication to a client’s personal and financial wellbeing,” continues Matthew.
“JOYN’s focus on a client’s whole life and how each part affects their finances was compelling. And JOYN walks the walk. They have Behavioral Wealth Specialists that work hand-in-hand with financial advisors to deliver deeper value to clients, I don’t know of any other firms that can do this.”
