We live in wealth bubbles. On a global scale, almost everyone we know is rich. On a national scale, many of us are rich. Yet we often don’t feel rich because we’re surrounded by people who are even richer than we are. And when we compare our relative wealth, we typically compare ourselves to the select few with more and ignore the vast multitudes with less.
Living in a wealth bubble creates a challenging environment in which to build a happy life. It can be difficult to cultivate a sense of gratitude for our riches when we’re surrounded by people who have even more. It’s easy to frame even our own charitable gifts as meaningless. Yes, it’s nice that we gave a few thousand dollars to help cure cancer, but it pales in comparison to someone else’s $100,000, or even $1,000,000 gift.
Burst your wealth bubble and embrace your riches. Embrace not only your financial riches, but also the riches of your talents, your wisdom, your intelligence, and your personal network. When you embrace your abundance, you cultivate a sense of gratitude and you connect with your capacity to change your life, and the lives of those around you, for the better.
