Many of us get so caught up in the stressful pursuit of success – in all its many forms – that we forget the euphoria we derive simply by being alive.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing our attention on pursuing things like the bigger house, lavish parties, our next European vacation. Our society glorifies success and it’s all too easy to rationalize that it’s worth it, but at what cost?
The cost of not noticing the world around us, of not seeing the leaves changing color, not hearing the hawk’s cry from the tall pines, or not feeling fall’s first cool breeze on our face? The cost of the missed conversation to connect with our spouse or friends, leaving us feeling disconnected and alone? The cost of the missed bike ride with our child or grandchild?
Perhaps most importantly, the pursuit of more can cause us to lose touch with ourselves, to be unaware of whether we are feeling glad, sad, mad or scared, and to lose our connection to what matters most to us. When we become numb to our own feelings and lose touch with ourselves, we are truly lost.
Today, I invite you to reset your receiver. Fine tune your attention and notice – really notice – the world around you and the feelings within you. Just for one blissful moment, take a deep breath, pause, and enjoy the simple euphoria of being alive.
